D. Maryland
Learn More: Camp David, the oft-mentioned presidential retreat, is located not far from the national capital in the state of Maryland. Situated only around 60 miles from Washington, D.C., Camp David is a country retreat in the forest of Catoctin Mountain Park. Officially termed the Naval Support Facility Thurmont, the camp was completed in 1938 to house federal government agents and their families. However, President Franklin D. Roosevelt took it over shortly after in 1942, naming it “Shangri-La,” which was a Himalayan paradise in “Lost Horizon,” a novel by James Hilton. In 1953, the site was renamed Camp David by Dwight Eisenhower to honor the president’s father.
