After not being able to play the last two Wednesday’s due to bad weather twenty-nine people came to play Hoss Collar last night, February 19th.  Beautiful night, just a little bit nippy not much wind and we all had fun and lots of laughter. Marlys Hustad had to take a breather after a few frames so Marlys Timm who was observing, played and then her husband Marvin, who had also been observing played as well. They shared the same scorecard and had a total score of 421. Linda Lang won 1st Place with 694 points, she and Dale Hustad were playing as a team and after 8 frames of the first game they had 287points, well, they got too excited and “scored” a minus 2 points in the ninth and final frame.  Too bad but it was fun anyway. Chuck Hull took 2nd Place with 587 points and Moe LaFavre came in 3rd Place with a very close 586 points. Such an easy game to learn. It takes about 5 minutes and you’re a pro.  Bring a One Dollar Bill and join us next Wednesday between 6:00 and 6:15PM.

Golf Course

Many mornings I will walk around the golf course that Trophy Gardens shares with its sister park next door. Unless it is really a dismal day and there really haven't been too many of those this season without fail there are people out there golfing. I am not a golfer but I suspect that the golf course may be one of the reasons that people choose this Wilder park. Residents can play for free and it is very handy. It is conveniently located between the two parks and as I walk around I see lots of golf clubs at various residences so I know it is a popular spot. The bonus for me is that I also almost always will see at least one Jack Rabbit and quite often there will be six of them out there playing.

Red Hat Day in Trophy Gardens

This morning when I climbed upstairs to meet with the knitting group this was the scene that met my eyes when I looked over the railing. The hall was filled with two of my favorite colors, red and purple and it really was a sight to behold. It was so festive and the ladies looked like they were all having a good time. I really don't know how the Red Hat organization works but I could see that the tables all were set differently and it really was fun to look at. I told my fellow knitters that I was going back to get my camera so that I could capture all that color.

Sunday 2-16-2020

Friday at Card Bingo, Long time resident, Curt Meyerhoff, won the last game. He will be leaving Trophy Gardens at the end of the month. As it so happens that he is moving into a place in Sheldon, Iowa, that has several Trophy Garden past residents.  I know quite a few of them and maybe you do too!! Ervin & Gladys Bolkema, Bob & Betty Petkelder, Phyllis Rook, Thelma Tien, Chris Peters, and Marie Van Veldhuizen and now Curt Meyerhoff. Hi to all from Trophy.

I just got the call about the Winter Ranch-Trophy Gardens Bridge Tournament which was held last week.  Trophy Gardens averaged 2742 points and Winter Ranch averaged 2649 points so Trophy Gardens will keep the trophy for another year!  John Chalko and Barbara Willis were winners from Trophy.

“From Rainy and Henry...We want to say a big THANK YOU to all our Trophy friends who attended our show at Winter Ranch and a special thanks to Russell and Kathy Cropp along with Stephanie and Jason for their support in getting the word out to y’all.   Also, to those who took the time to vote for me in the Valley Star Awards, we really appreciate your support.   To say that we are overwhelmed is truly an understatement!”

TRIVIA CLUE
I have discovered that sometimes the Trophy Gardens blog is not visible on some people's phones. Sometimes it is temporary. I have not been able to find a definitive answer for most situations. My best guess is that the blog format is too large for the phone. In other words, the print would have to be so small you couldn't see it or so large you couldn't read it. I put the clue link on Facebook, Bits and Pieces, and Trophy Gardens blog. I believe that one of those avenues should be open to you. If I were faced with this dilemma I would find the search bar and type in trophygardens.blogspot.com on whatever apparatus I was using to search the Internet. If one doesn't work try another. Trophy Gardens Birding

We currently have a couple of bird feeding areas set up in the park and the birds are finding them. I was up by the one that is near the front gate early this evening and it was busy with both Red-winged Blackbirds and Northern Mockingbirds. They are enjoying the seeds as well as the water drip. Across the street in the Butterfly Garden is a hummingbird feeder and it looks to me like the syrup in it is going down so I'm assuming the hummingbirds have found it.

If you are interested in birding the Rio Grande Valley is a mecca for birders and Trophy Gardens is pretty centrally located to access many of the "hot" birding spots around the valley in addition to having a variety of birds right here in the resort. Because this is Valentine's Day I thought I would post one more photo that I took last year, not in this park but on February 17 which was close enough to Valentine's Day that they reminded me of love-birds. There are several varieties of parrots and parakeets down here and these are Red-crowned Parrots. I have seen flocks of parrots fly over Trophy but at least thus far, none have landed.

Park Meeting
From the park meeting on Tuesday. What a wild time with the Cupids coming out and handing out candy and kisses!! ****Lynn is BACK!! She reported that there are 644 people in the park on 350 sites and 81 Furry Babies. The office is asking that you put your site number on your permeate model or model units. The 1st responders are having trouble locating some lots. ****Your rates are the same as last year and you are reminded to pay before April 1st to get the discount. ****Corporate has hired a photographer to take pictures. If interested in being in them sign up.

From JD: Respect your neighbor's right to quiet time.   Quiet time starts at 10:00 pm.

*******On my soapbox: IF someone in the park has a beef with our managers go see them. Don't leave unsigned threats on a bulletin board. Lynn and JD have an open-door policy at all times. They are the best managers we have had in a long time. They care about you and our Park.

Safety Issue
Walking on Trophy's streets about dusk and later into the evening
I notice many golf carts and bikes do not use their lights.
A few drivers:
- drive in the middle of the street
- still have a heavy foot ( save some fuel and your $$ )
Walkers need to face the vehicles.
Safety is #1.
Thank you ,
A concerned resident
--Thanks Shirley I have noticed that too and walkers need to wear something other than black!!

After lunch, Tom Daggett showed the Vets pictures from the dedication of our Veterans in the first year of Veterans wall was put up. *Then The Busy Bees handed out Quillows to the Veterans that have not gotten one before.

Teri and Jerry Thibodeau have been asked numerous times if we would play our movie "Expulsion" once again. So, just in time for the start of Mardi Gras and its Cajun heritage, we will present our historical documentary for those who wish to view it once more or, for the first time!
The movie will be played on February 16th in the Trophy Garden main hall at 4:00pm. I have included a link to the films "trailer" so you will have a better understanding of its content. This film has been professionally produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Trivia results for 2/4/2020
Team Smarty Pants: Dan, Linda, and Chris Lang, Heather and Richard Donald, Barb Jacobson, Jean and Bob Williams, Jerry and Connie Gillean and Chris Cronk surprised themselves when coming in first with a score of 108.
Team WDK (We Don't Know): Sheryl Cavage, Willard and Barb Utech, Maureen Thompson, Candy Dewey, Phil, and Sue Hudson also surprised themselves with a second-place win of 94.
The lower scores reflect the fact that the questions were on the more challenging side. That changes from week to week. The maximum score that can be achieved is 150. If the questions were too easy we would have ties that would then need tiebreaker questions. As in all aspects of life, it is a balancing act. Having a boatload of fun with friends remains consistent. I have been asked if it is okay to come and listen to the questions without participating and it most certainly is welcomed for you to do so. Come on along!  Hosts Barb and Butch Brooker

Coba Internet Problems?

It was announced in the meeting this morning that many people who are getting Coba Internet are experiencing difficulties and the company has agreed to suspend payments until the issue is resolved.
One thing you can try to get better reception is to make sure your computer/phone/laptop etc is not trying to connect to your previous system, Wilder, for example. If both systems, Wilder and Coba are trying to connect it will create a battle that no one wins.

How do I get my computer to forget a WiFi network?
First, click on the WiFi icon in your taskbar. Next, click on 'Wifi Settings.' (On my computer that is near the bottom.)Then select 'Manage Wi-Fi Settings.' Find the network and Internet systems you want to "Forget" and then click 'Forget.'

This may or may not fix the problem but it is certainly worth a try. Another hint is that you will need to do this procedure on all of your Internet-capable devices.

New Bird Feeding Areas

The Rio Grande Valley is a mecca for birders and here in Trophy Gardens we are setting up some feeding areas.  Serving on the "birding" committee are Tom & Sara Daggett, Barb Brooker, and Jim & Deon Spangler. Also helping us are the Garden and Butterfly Garden  groups. This is a work in progress but we have one area set up in the garden area just east of the main street when you come into the resort. It is on the corner of Champion Parkway and Grand Slam. There have been several birds sighted at the suet and seed feeders there including a Northern Mockingbird. Here is the setup with the feeders as well as a photo of a Northern Mockingbird. There are lots of these birds here in the park and I believe they are the state bird of Texas.

Shown below is the setup behind the apartment house which is on the corner of  Trophy Gardens Drive and Blue Ribbon. It is directly behind the little building by the swimming pool and kind of across from the laundry building. This is an unrentable lot because it is too small for the size of the rigs that most folks have nowdays so it was suggested as a way to make good use of it. We are hoping for a bench of some kind to sit on and I would like to see some sort of bird bath. Birds love to splash around in a bird bath and it could be fun to watch them. The folks who are in the motor home right next to this spot have reported to me that they did see a hummingbird there and I noticed this evening that the suet has been pecked on. It always takes a while for the birds to find a new source of food but it would seem they are going to like it. This morning when I went on my morning walk I toted the camera along and happened to see this hummingbird in a tree back in the "North Forty." It is a Buff-bellied and I am guessing that is most likely what has found the feeder. It has a red bill with a black tip which makes it easy identifiable. There are lots of other kinds of birds in this park and it is fun to watch to see what will turn up next. It is just one of the many things that we like about Trophy Gardens!

This weeks pictures

As I was walking north alongside the golf course I was smelling CILANTRO and then I noticed they were harvesting. It most certainly had to be cilantro. The wind was from the north.

This Jackrabbit is either young or underfed or both?

This mockingbird was in the ebony tree in the newest bird feeding area.

This area is in the right-hand garden as you enter the resort. It is taken care of by volunteers and features all native South Texan plants. Much worth a walk through.

This golden fronted woodpecker was outside our window in our much-beloved shade tree.

Tell me the name of this awesome plant, okay?
