Rio Grande Valley To Do List

Rio Grande Valley To Do List

I am going to need some help with this list. Help me add to it, please. And you folks who are no longer coming down please send me an email to tell me what you most miss about the Rio Grande Valley. In no particular order...

1. South Padre Island
a. Beach walk
b. Dirty Al's
c. Pirate's Landing
d. Kite Festival
e. Port Isabel- The Shrimp boats is a comin'

2. Basilica at San Juan
http://www.sanjuanshrine.org/
Even if you are not Catholic this is worth a stop.

3. Nuevo Progreso, Mexico
Everyone has a favorite place to eat/shop so go on down and develop your own favorites.

4. Riverside- right on the Rio Grande River. Great Food and Music. A fun place to gather with friends. Located south of Mission TX

5. Ropa Usada- means used clothing in Spanish and there are several places south on 23rd street out of McAllen where bargain hunters load up with used items for pennies a pound. An experience not to be missed.

6. Los Ebanos hand-pulled Ferry. This is not a highly touted tourist attraction. You can ride the ferry across the Rio Grande by car, bicycle or on foot and then it is about a mile to the first little Mexican village. They do not cater to all the fanciful things you will find in Nuevo Progreso. They are friendly but it is Mexico at a more primitive level. English is not spoken by many. It is a whole other country.

7. Golf at several different courses all of them a bargain compared to other parts of the country.

8. Park Activities- We cannot overlook our own backyard.

9. Santa Ana National Park- Your Golden Age Pass will get you into the park to spend several hours enjoying nature.

10. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park
See Javelina and every bird known to the Rio Grande Valley.

11. The original Iwo Jima Memorial in Harlingen TX

12.https://www.fws.gov/refuge/laguna_atascosa/
Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

13. http://port-mansfield.com/ Lots of people go to Port Mansfield to see the deer and other wildlife

Short Crowd

Short crowd at trivia last night. It did not keep us from having a good time. There are so many choices to make on the activities that it can sometimes be hard to choose just one. The Alamo Angels came in first again. I must admit there are some stellar players on that team but surely there are some players out there willing to clip those "Angels" wings. We will find out next Tuesday the 23rd at 6:30 in the main hall.

I found a volunteer to take Butch's place on keeping score. Reenie Stinson did a great job, She will be a great addition to our trivia family.

Here are some pictures that Candy Dewey took. I appreciate her help too.

Team SmartyPants

Team Alamo Angels

Reenie is our new scorekeeper

Butch gave Reenie a bit of instruction before skipping out on us.

The collection plates are near the North & South door. We will not be passing them due to the virus.

Darel Palm said if you want to learn about the sound system, he would be willing to teach you. ***He also said that the monitors are coming back and the woodshop will be open. If it isn't you can call one to help you.

Marsha Schmidt, First Responder, you need to fill out the new paper and put it in your red envelope that is in your check-in bag. Put the old one in your car glove compartment.

Once I am here

and in Trophy Gardens it makes it easier for me to post things. There are so many things taking place in the resort that I cannot possibly keep up with all of them. I am very grateful for the help that Betsie Brown with bits and pieces gives us. And if you send me something of interest I will be happy to post it too. Now that I am in the resort I do post things that are happening to Butch and me on a personal level and if you wish to check in on us too that is AOK. You can find us at www.brooker3.blogspot.com

3 of us women of Trophy have decided to make an early morning walk a part of our regular routine. It is so much easier to keep it going if you have someone who is expecting you to show up at a given time and will miss you if you are a no-show. So if you see 3 women walking at 7:30 AM there is a good chance it will be us.

Best wishes always,

Barb Brooker

The pizza Party at Peter Pipper Pizza this Friday will Start at 5:00 pm!!

I misspelled Kathy's name. The last name is Mennen. Birthday on November 25th.

We need prayers for Joan Taylor. She is in the hospital. Let's get the prayer wheel spinning for her.

From the park meeting today:

Lynn reported that there are: 205 people in the park, on 119 sites.

With 47 pets.

**** When done playing cards in the hall, be sure the lights are off.

****The hall will be closed on Saturday morning from 9:00 am until the meeting for the RGVQG is done.

****You need to wear your badges in RV facilities and at activities.

****Watch your speed. The Speed limit in the park is 10 MPH. We don't want speed bumps!! Do not leave junk like tires, wood, and trash at the Main Shop. You need to get rid of that yourself.

From Stephanie:

**** A tentative date has been set for January 31st for a Prom Party

****Pickleball is Friday from 11:00 to 3:00 pm.

Bean Bag is Tuesday & Thursday at 1:00 pm in the hall.

****ForBand and online directory see Jason. He will help you get them on your phone. With BAND you will get notices and things going on from Stephanie

****The next park meeting is going to be a PAJAMA Party. Wear your PJ's but not your birthday suit!! ****Tuesday will have breakfast Burritos to buy. Come early and have one while wearing your PJ's.

Fran Adams talked about Air Med Care. There will be four “Meals On Wheels” again this year to raise money for the park membership. One will be in December, January, February, and March.

Mike and Monika Reis made mini waffles before the meeting today. They were very good. I had an apple one with whipped cream on it!! There was quite a variety to choose from.

Darel Palm told us about saving all pop or beer cans for the woodshop. There are places to put your used cans at the garbage dumpster, in the hall by the kitchen window, and by the air pump just past the woodshop. Leave the tabs on the cans and they will be taken off and saved for the Ronald McDonald house. They will also take the steel cans such as soup cans, etc. Please rinse them out and take the bottoms off to help Charley out. There is a trailer behind the woodshop to put things like broken microwaves, hot water heaters, or anything that can be taken apart and reuse the metal in them. NO TIRES or unusable junk!!

Bits & Pieces Sunday 11-7-2021

Sunday 11-7-2021

Add two more names to your November birthday list: Kathy Memmem on November 27th and Cindy Kelly on November 27th.

Hey, all Busy Bees out there, we are going to have our Christmas Party on January 26th so make something to trade at the party.

Quilting classes will be given again this year. There will be a very Beginners class and a Make & Take class.

There were 77 people in church this morning. We sang to Pastor Randy's guitar as we didn't have a piano player yet. It was a wonderful service.

Today was our first Sunday afternoon to enjoy the start of Mixed Doubles pool playing...    We had six couples that played...   There were two teams that tied for first place with each team winning four of the six games played... The top teams for the first time playing this season were team Terry Thibodeau & Keny Patrick...  and team Barb Brooker & Bob Nance...  The next scheduled Sunday mixed doubles will be November 21st at 1:30 start time...  We even had a new Mixed double player - Bob Nance-   welcome.

****Correction to the last Bits & Pieces:  Hand, Knee, and foot are on Wednesday & Friday at 12:40 pm.

****After discussion, it was decided that Peter Piper Pizza is 4:00 pm not 5:00 on Friday.

 Bits & Pieces

Wednesday 11-3-2021

Another of Trophy's past members has passed away. Don Jorgensen of Lanesboro, Iowa passed away Tuesday. Cards can be sent to Debbie Ausborn, 308 Sidford, Lake City IA 51449

I have three names to be added to your Birthday and Anniversary calendars. Birthday's: November 11th add Vicki Pratt, and Kathy Ringer November 27th.

Ralph & Judy Brill November 21st. This will be their 57th anniversary,

Jake Jacobson is doing very well after his heart surgery and is finished with rehab. One more doctor visit in December. His wife, Barb developed an irregular heartbeat. After testing she was told today it was due to the third vaccine shot and the cardiologist has seen some of this. So now all is well. It looks good right now for coming to Texas after Christmas. Thank you for all the cards and prayers. That really helped.  Barb

From the park meeting Tuesday. Lynn:

***There are 163 people in the park on 96 lots with 63 pets.

***Office hours will be 9:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays

8:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday

9:00 am to 4:00 pm Sunday

***Worship will be at 9:30 am this Sunday.

From JD: Thanks for your patience with the water being off. The ground is shifting and the coupling breaks.

Activity Director Stephanie reported that:

***Mixed doubles pool will be on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 1:30 pm. Ladies' pool days will start on Monday and Tuesday next week.

***Pictures for a new photo directory will start to be taken. December 9th & 10th will be the first dates to have your picture taken. Register with Stephanie. When you get your picture taken you will get a free 8” X 10” picture and a photo directory. Remember pets are part of your family so include them in your picture. The photo directory is very worth having. I have about 8 of them and I use them all the time.

***Hand, Knee, and Foot will be Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 pm in the Sun Rise Room.

***Lot Sales are this Saturday. See “Band” and see which lots are selling.

***First Responders are up and running if you need them. They were here all Summer for those that needed them.

***Bean bag starting November 9th at 1:00 pm in the hall.

Russell told us that Bev McEnaney will be hosting the first Pizza Party on November 12th at 5:00 pm at Peter Piper Pizza in Alamo.

Card Bingo is Friday at 6:30 pm. Bring $2.00 to play.  10 cents a game.

Barb & Wayne Dunker invited everyone to come and listen to Ron Moshier playing. 3:00 pm on lot 362. Bring something to share and enjoy the music.

Barb Brooker: Trivia is starting next Tuesday.   Went for a walk this morning and within a 5 minute period was asked when trivia would be starting by 3 different people. So I am saying the start date will be Tuesday, November 9th at 6:40 PM in the main hall. Odd start time one might say and the reason for that is Jeopardy! is on week-nights at 6:00 PM so I can still watch it and make it to the hall for trivia. I am in need of a volunteer helper. Interest in playing the game is not a requirement. Picking up the entries and keeping the scores require some simple math skills. A cheerful disposition is a must!
