Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Just think about what we would have done had we known what 2020 was going to hand us? The reality is probably nothing because I doubt we would have believed it could possibly happen.

But here we are looking at a brand new year and all its possibilities. Being an eternal optimist I am going out on a limb here and say it will be as good as the last was not. The pendulum must swing the other way.

So with a big dose of hope in my heart I wish you all a happy new year.

Bits & Pieces

Thursday 12-24-2020

David Pardo would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Also thank you for the gift of bread.

Peggy Carnes would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  I miss everyone and especially my oil painting students.  Hopefully 2021 will be a better year for everyone.  I’m doing well, but miss teaching!  Love you all!

I got the wrong address for Marcella Rook. It is 1431 West Second St Pella 50219. I used an old book---sorry

Hello from the Tilton's (former) residents for eighteen years. Had a lot of fun, miss you,  Merry Christmas to all.  Gail and Shirley

Bits & Pieces 12-27-2020

Bits & Pieces

12-27-2020

I got a call from Coke Fellenstein today. She is asking for prayers for Charles as he is in the hospital. He went to the hospital on Christmas morning. Need to get the prayer wheel spinning for Charles.

Mary Beecher wants to wish everyone a Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year. Spent 16 years at Trophy and enjoyed every day of it.

On Wednesday night, December 23rd, playing Hoss Collar was great, the big wind and cold didn’t arrive until after midnight, so we had fun! Dot Zylistra came in 1st Place with 574 points, (and I am so happy that she did this so I could finally, after all these years, learn how to spell her last name).  John Chalko came in 2nd with 566 points and Dan Lang came in 3rd with 560 points. We play Hoss Collar Wednesday nights and Saturday nights at 6:30PM.  Bring a dollar bill and your mask, we sanitize the sticks, pencils, and benches, and play every other court for your safety. We play regular shuffleboard every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:00AM. All times are weather permitting.  We will teach you how to play both games. EASY to learn.

Any time you are not getting Bits & Pieces please let me know so I can check it out.

The Best Gift

This Christmas remember the Spirit of Christmas and keep it dear. And make the very first gift you give the greatest one: Give the gift of love.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, love is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things…. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians Chapter 13

May you and those you love have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS filled with love and joy – and the true spirit of Christmas.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!

 Bits & Pieces

Thursday 12-17-2020

Lynn reported that there are 304 people on 171 sites with 53 pets. The numbers are growing.

CFO (Caring For Others) Donation Station is currently closed. We are cleaning and organizing. We are not taking donations at this time. We appreciate your patience. Plans are to reopen in 2021 Thank you for your support.

Thank you for all of the calls and cards following Jim’s death. Our years at Trophy Gardens were filled with such special memories of our friends and the many activities we enjoyed.  Trophy will always be a heartwarming memory. Lynette Jackson

Hoss Collar results for Saturday, December 12th.  The evening started out pretty windy but soon the wind died down and the weather was downright pleasant.  Many of the players were really “hot”, as we had some extremely high scores.  LeRoy Moore was on fire and took 1st Place with an astounding 794 points; Dale Hustad was trying to catch up with 734 points and took 2nd Place.  Linda Lang beat out John Chalko by one point with 694 and 693 points respectably. Lance Pearson followed with 687 points. LeRoy only needed 6 points to put him in the “800 Club” whose only member is Kristi Johnston with a total of 802 points. LeRoy is the highest point member of the “700 Club”. Linda and LeRoy tied Ted Peluk and Linda’s high score of 317 points for a single game, which is really weird. We play Hoss Collar Wednesday nights and Saturday nights starting at 6:30PM  We wear masks, our sticks are sanitized and we practice social distancing.  Regular shuffleboard is played Mon, Wed, & Friday mornings starting at 9:00AM.  Wear a mask, and sticks are sanitized and we practice social distancing. Come out and get some Vitamin D.

Sunday's Mixed pool doubles.....  We had another fun Sunday afternoon in the pool hall with 12 people playing.    16 people signed up but two couples had to cancel...    Our top winning teams were   Barb Utech & Harry Link.   Janet Yeley & Butch Brooker and Bev McEnaney & Jim Weeks...   Our next Mixed doubles games are on December 20th and the start time is 1:00.   The signup sheet is up...  Come join in on the fun...

There is going to be a Christmas Eve church service at 6:00 p m. Wear your masks and sit in the chairs as placed in the hall.

And now you know

And now you know why we sanitize the pool hall equipment after every use.

Trivia

You know how they’ve been saying not to go to a gym during the pandemic? Well, this might have something to do with it… FitRated.com collected samples from 27 pieces of gym equipment from three different gyms and found there were more than one million germs per square inch on every piece of equipment – hooooooly cow! The equipment with the most germs was the treadmill, followed by the exercise bike, followed by free weights. Free weights, they found, had 362 times more bacteria on them than a toilet seat.

T'was a Good Idea

Moving back to our hometown of Jefferson Iowa was a good idea and we didn't even know to what extent at the time. As anyone who knows me can tell you, my Internet connection is important to me and surprisingly more so as time goes on. It is my one indulgence and I do not see that changing as long as I can rub two brain cells together.

And here is an article that surprised and pleased me on this subject.

Apartments available

The management at Trophy Gardens has made it known they have 11 apartments available for rent for the month of January 2021. This is unheard of! They usually tell me that March is the best month to find an opening.

Great care is being taken in the Rio Grande Valley as far as the virus is concerned. Masks are required EVERYWHERE and you will get called on it if you choose to not abide by the rules. As of right now, Alamo Texas, where Trophy G. is located has a percentage of 4.3. Masks and distancing do work.

So pick up the phone and call  (956) 787-7717 And see when you might be able to enjoy some sunshine in sunny south Texas.

 Bits & Pieces

Monday 12-8-2020

It is with sadness that I tell you of the passing of Bill Hammas this morning. He was Wynn's dad. Mary tells me that she, Wynn, and Mark, Wynn's brother, were able to say their goodbyes. He passed away very peacefully. He had gone out to the farm on Saturday and Sunday with Wynn and Mark to “hunt” (to enjoy the view) and to drive a truck so this last weekend was his Heaven on Earth. Then he went to Heaven above today. As Mary said he was the best loving father-in-law a girl could have. Most of you will remember Bill for taking care of the “Hammas Rose Garden” when you drive into the RV Park. Cards can be sent to Wynn and Mary Hammas 4243 E. 58th St., Davenport, IA 52807

We are back at it...  This Sunday, December 6th. was our first official Mixed Doubles pool tournament and we did ok...  Well some of us did ok...  There are only ten people allowed in the pool hall at one time...  So, we had five teams and each team played two games with the same team... Each team played a total of eight games...  Winning team was Teri Thibodeau & Paul Kelleher with 6 games won.   Two teams won 5 games each and they are team Sally Kelleher & Moe LaFavre and team Janet Yeley & Alex Stinson.   We were careful to obey all the rules and everyone wore their mask and stayed a social distance...  We also cleaned the tables and pool balls with disinfectant.     The next Mixed Doubles is  Sunday afternoon  December 13th at 1:00 start time--the sign-up sheet is up...

Bits & Pieces Tuesday 12-1-2020

Bits & Pieces

Tuesday 12-1-2020

This from Carol Rossmann: I Thought I would let you know that I have moved from Ames to Waukee. I am living in a 55 plus community called Attivo Trails. The kids wanted me to get closer to one of them and they located this place near my son Darin. He is only 5 minutes away. My new address is: 835 NE Boston Pkwy, Apt 3212, Waukee, IA 50263

Dale & Marlys Husted wants Trophy people to know that there will be lots of free items at Lot # 680 on the day of the in-park garage sale on Saturday.

From the park meeting this morning Lynn reported there are: 272 people in the park on 155 sites. There are 50 pets.

Corrections on the December Birthday & Anniversary calendar: Ann Bunke should be on December 7th, Remove Jerry Hibbs, and Bunny Schultz I spelled her last name wrong. Add Tim Schmuck on December 13th.

Can you believe it is December already? At times I didn't think this year would ever end with all that has gone on. Besides the virus, Marion was hit with the Derecho. I'm still cleaning up from that storm. We had winds up to 145 mph.

This from Barb Brooker-

We are settled into this very different year in the Rio Grande Valley with Covid-19. The task force of Hidalgo county that is handling the rules for behavior has gained positive national recognition for their success.

Wash your hands, wear a mask, and socially distance is being adhered to here better than anywhere else we have ever been. And the numbers show at a modest 6.75% that it works.

And our park is steller in their abidance of the rules.

We are warm, healthy, and happy to be here!

They are still burning cane fields in the Rio Grande Valley:

Till next time!

While I appreciate the get well card  I do not have covid now or ever (so far).  Thanks to all the well-wishers but there has been a mistake  I don't have covid.

Thanks,

 Mark Trimm

From the park meeting on Tuesday Lynn reported: There are 144 people in the park on 85 sites with 31 pets. The numbers are starting to grow. She mentioned the renovation in the chapel. The seats have been recovered, new paint and new carpeting have been put down. Check it out when you get to Trophy.

The hall has been set up for use with social distancing. Fewer tables and fewer chairs. Church will begin in the hall on November 8th. The chairs are also set up for social distancing.

They are asking for you to self-quarantine for 10 days when you get to the park.

The Activities Office has a new pet. Stephanie got a pet for the office as a birthday gift from Lynn and Jason, “A pretty fish”.

I got good news from my Dr. on Wednesday!! I will be able to head to Trophy in a couple of weeks. I'm so excited.  Time to pack.....

Winters Blue Light

Winter's Blue Light

 by Barbara Brooker

Bare-naked trees and the blue light of Winter,

Settle into old bones with the pain of a splinter,

Take me away, where warm breezes flow,

We don't need reminding, it is time to go.

An Iowa Child

Trophy Garden has a fair amount of Iowa Children. I thought they might like this poem.

Iowa Child
by Sarah Hall Maney

I am an Iowa child
Part and product of the land on which I grew
Flat and open and straight, like
the farm roads that bordered the corn
Friendly and receptive, like the rich,
black soil that grows the corn
Simple, and plain, but productive,
Like the fields of soybeans and hay

Yes, I am an Iowa child
There have been times when
I have kept it hidden
Pretending somewhere, something, someone else
But today I stand with it
Drawing upon the strength of it -
Acknowledging the unique gifts
I share with it

Of course, an Iowa child has not many
deep, intriguing forests within -
Not many clear, refreshing lakes to draw upon
No lofty, grand mountain peaks to soar from
No yawning canyons to descend -

And I know my Iowa child must live
And come to terms with the part of me
That is controlled, precise, yearning
to be perfect -
Like the squared-off, ruler-straight rows
of hybrid seed corn

Perhaps I will never be
as exciting, as spontaneous,
as a tumbling Colorado mountain stream
As magnificent as a
crashing California ocean wave
As serene and stately as a Minnesota pine tree

But no matter
I am who I am
An Iowa child
And that is enough

What the ???? (update)

(Update) I once again must apologize. I am able to post on 3 different blogs, this one, the one connected to the park we were in for many years, and my personal blog highlighting our activities since 2002. And when I prepare a post and hit the publish button I should make note of which blog I am working on. This post was one of those occasions when I failed to do so. So it is out of context and may not make a lick of sense to you. It was meant for www.brooker3.blogspot.com

So they called yesterday to tell us the moho was ready for pick up. It was forecast to be a low of 20 degrees last night so we viewed the message with mixed feelings but decided to go get it so we were in control of what happens to it. After all who knows it better than we do having lived in it full time for 10 years and half time for 6 years. It looks great with its new topside. But...

The furnace wasn't working. We thought it started to work but we were wrong because it was not working this morning. Semi panic set in. Decisions had to be made. Butch worked on it for several hours before deciding we had no other choice than to winterize it. So the process began. Now those of you who do this annually have acquired a routine for it. We winterized our first RV once and vowed we would never do it again and haven't until now.

We toyed with the idea of just taking off for southern climes but the prospect of loading it up for our trek south was no more appealing in 20-degree weather than winterizing. So we winterized. The weather is supposed to improve next Friday with a high of 50 degrees. Now sounding absolutely balmy! So that will be our target date for getting moved into with all the things we need for the winter in Texas.

So bad news is we need to get the furnace working and/or repaired asap. The good news is every nook and cranny will be getting a thorough cleaning. In the winterization process, every cabinet and drawer must be scoured for items that might freeze and break. I have been looking at long-forgotten items in the far recesses of the motorhome. It is a perfect time to reassess each and every item to see if it is worthy of the space it takes to haul it around. Now doesn't that sound like fun?

More later...I am tired

Let's turn the prayer wheel for the Shafer family and others of our Trophy family that have passed away. This has been a terrible year for so many things: Deaths, sickness, Derecho, very high winds, and bad weather. I'm sure there are others I didn't mention.

Another former resident passes away Sunday. Connie(Loren) Law.  Cards for her family can be sent to Linda Law at 518 Tiger Blvd.  Bentonville, Ark. 72712 Connie was Randy Williamson's aunt.

When someone passes away, I mark it in my directories. Finding Connie was a walk back through several directories of the past. I looked at the pictures in 1995-1996 to find her. There were so many faces and names to see. What fun!!

I have Coke and Charles Fellinstein's address to pass along to you. Be sure to mark it in your directories. 15325 S. Lone Elm Rd., Apt 212, Olathe, KS 66061

It's been 2 months since Howard suffered his brain bleed.  He put up a good fight but couldn't overcome pneumonia.  We want to Thank the Trophy family for the support you showed us with prayers, cards, and kind words.  Howard enjoyed 17 winters at Trophy making many wonderful friends. The Koehoorns Sue, Pam, Kaye, Jeff and Lisa

Bev McEnaney's nephew, Tim Cummings - age 54 had a bad stroke and had brain surgery to remove one of the clots.  He is not able to speak clearly and walking is not an option and has another clot????  Please help with more prayers. Spin the Prayer Wheel for Tim!!

Safe travels to those heading South.

Add to your October Calendar: the anniversary of Derrell (Digger) & Cleo Donelan on the 24th.

If anyone knows these people, could you email them and have them let me know their corrected email address. I keep getting their Bits & Pieces back. mkmans@gpcom.net Roger & Kay Mans This is the address that I have right now, but it is incorrect.

Carol MacDonald, a past member of the Trophy family, wrote to me about her quilting. Soon I will have to get rid of all the quilting fabric that I just didn't get to finish. Anyone heading to Texas and will be driving anywhere near Hwy 44 in W. St Louis county give me a call and I will send pictures of the two patterns (and all needed fabric) to Trophy with you. I should not have said I didn't finish as I didn't even start them! If you are able to get these things from Carol: Call Carol 314-221-0660    We are about 2 minutes from the intersection of 44 and 141. Thanks for your help.

Bob Hamilton let me know that his wife Velma passed away from cancer on January 16th of this year. We were residents of Trophy from 2011-2013. We were on Blue Ribbon lot 237. Thank you for letting us know so we can carry a rose for her on Remembrance Sunday.

Lynn's manager's notes for Tuesday: there are 87 people on 54 sites and 18 pets in the park. She suggested that when you return to Trophy bring Clorox Wipes with you as they are hard to find there. The stay in place order has been lifted. The “Valley” is opened for business.

Places are opening up in the park: pool, golf course, horseshoe, shuffleboard, and etc....

If you haven't let the office know your desire for a gate fob or keycard, do as it will be ready for you when you get there. Send an e-mail to trophygardens@rvresorts.com Fobs will be $40. and the keycards are $10.

 Bits & Pieces   Sunday 8-30-2020

I asked Gail Fields how her house in Louisiana fared after the hurricane. Her reply: The house had water on the bottom floor.   But it is built for that.  Flow-through vents and cement walls.  The new owner will pressure wash and be good.

After reading Facebook this morning I wanted to pass on to you that Sharron Adelmund and Lance Pearson are having surgery tomorrow. I'm sure they can use your prayers for a safe recovery.

This month will soon be over and September is on the way. If you want to add your name to the September Birthday and Anniversary list send them to me tomorrow.

Wednesday 8-26-2020

Nancy Johnson is asking for prayers Thursday for Lowell. He is having back fusion surgery Thursday morning and we need lots of Trophy Gardens prayers.  Let's get the prayer wheel spinning for Lowell.

From Shirley Greving I am minded that I had failed to express my sincere appreciation for all the special cards and correspondence and prayers from Trophy Garden friends at the time of my dear Leland's death.  It was a very long good-bye.  The memorial service was truly a celebration of his life which encompassed the seventeen winters we were privileged to winter at your park.  Sending thanks for the well-wishes for my health I am in cardiac rehab and as hard as I am working, heart muscle repair must be working.  Love to all, Shirley Greving

Bits & Pieces Wednesday 8-20-2020

 Bits & Pieces

Wednesday 8-20-2020

The family of Jerry McEnaney wishes to thank everyone for their kindness.   We so appreciated the cards,  letters, memorials, kind words, and prayers.   Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.

I have called Trophy friends that live near me to see how they came out in the Derecho Storm we had last week. Jan & Lloyd Hofmaster live by a park full of trees and some of them ended up in their back yard. They had family there to help them clean up.

I just talked to Bob and Kay Lind. They are now on day 10 without electricity. They are okay after the storm and probably lost the trees in their front yard. They have moved to the SouthEast side of Cedar Rapids and they will be one of the areas that are last on. Kay has a new phone number 319-826-0299. I had misplaced their new address so I asked it for it again. 140 35th St. SE unite 4, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52403

Talked to Reed and Wanda Weinberg and they are both okay. They have been out and about looking at some of the damage.

I'm so glad everyone is safe and healthy.

Lynn reported, Tuesday, that there will be a redo of the men's bathroom. —not that we will all get to see it! If it is anything like the ladies' bathroom redo it will be great. In Lynn's report to us that there are 87 people on 54 sites and 18 pets. Don't forget to contact the office about a keycard or fob for the front gate. trophygardens@rvresorts.com

The eastern part of Iowa was hit harder than we were but this Derecho thing did a number throughout the whole state. We noticed yesterday that the Perry Iowa area was hit harder than we were and it is only 30 miles away. We are in Jefferson Iowa and my blog entry is posted below with pictures of our personal damage. Our RV is currently waiting for repair but we do plan to be in Trophy this fall if "The Good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise". Oh yes, we are also in a severe drought!

Bits & Pieces Friday 8-14-2020

 Bits & Pieces

Friday 8-14-2020

As most of you might know Iowa had a terrible storm the other day. It was described as a hurricane without an eye. We haven't had electricity for three days. I had to use my van to keep my cell phone charged. There was lots of cleaning up to do. I had things in my yard that I have no idea where it came from. I spent three half days cleaning up tree limbs and miscellaneous junk. Lots of trees were lost in the high winds 100 to 150 mph.

I started this on Monday and then lost electricity. Well, I'm finally back on and if you want to see the winds, look at my posting on Facebook. Been spending the rest of the week cleaning up. I think we will be doing that for quite a while.

A former Trophy Gardens resident, Velma Manship is in the Iowa Methodist Hospital suffering from after-effects of COVID 19. She will probably be there for some time. I am sure she would like to hear from old friends and new ones. Her address is Iowa Methodist, 1200 Pleasant St., Des Moines IA 50309. In the bottom left corner write room 811 Thanks for the information whoever you are.

Be sure to spin the prayer wheel for Velma.

Sue Koohorn wrote there is an obituary for Howard on the Werner Harmsden website in Waupun.  There is a memorial video to watch too.

Kay Solberg has moved and here is her new address. Be sure to change your directory: 301 Co Rd 6, apt 105, Hills, MN 56138 new phone # 605-929-1352

Diana Teppo wants to thank you for all the prayers.  We are working to get Ernie better and hopefully postpone putting him in a  nursing home.

Several have had trouble getting on the email address I gave you yesterday for the fob or keycard. After a call to Lynn, I have another address for you.

Try: trophygardens@rvresorts.com  I had to put it in Google to open. Scroll down to where the resort information is and hit on the email address again. In the subject write fob or keycard. Skip down a ways and tell the office your request for the gate opener. Then send. I hope this works for you.

If you have trouble call me and I will walk you through it. 712-830-1538

Where did July go?? This summer is passing so fast.

Dan Lang sent this to me and asked me to post it in Bits & Pieces. Very important for you to read.

If you received a postcard “Notice of Estimated Taxes” that shows a URL of “hidalgo.truthintaxation.com ” DO NOT LOGIN to this Website.  It is a SCAM.  If you are NOT using High-Security Brower Settings they will attempt to steal your Logon and Password and Personal Information for other Web Sites. When I investigated the site I discovered that it is on the Firefox Black List.  So “Be Aware” and stay away.  This operation is designed to gather your personal information and is a potential fraud.

If you need tax information for your Mobile or Park Model use https://www.hidalgocounty.us/124/Tax-Office   Dan Lang

I have been reading on Facebook how Howard Koehoorn is doing. He caught pneumonia and it is complicating things. He isn't talking to anyone yet but is doing hand signals. They are hoping to do surgery this week. Prayers are still needed for Howard.

Randy Sorenson has a Birthday on Aug. 8th. Add him to the updated calendar!!

I had a great experience yesterday. I had a hot air balloon ride for about an hour. It was wonderful. It is so quiet up there. My family was the ground crew for the ride and Matt Bousselot was the captain. I posted pictures on FB.

If you have a chance to try it---go for it!!

If you have something you want to share, let me know

Let the prayer wheel spin for Howard Koehoorn!!
